District prelims - guess what? more rain!

Posted Wednesday, May 18, 2011 by Mike Hout
The rain keeps coming.  This time, though, we were able to wait it out a bit and all the field events and running events were competed in dry weather.  The good news is that the prediction for the District Finals is warmer weather and no rain!

Once again, the Viking athletes figured out how to do their best despite cooler weather and wet facilities.  Congratulations to our surprise athlete of the meet...Tyler Ikert.  He pulled a big upset by getting fourth in the discus and qualifying for the regionals with a new personal best toss.  Zak Kruer also qualified for the regionals but he sat in a more favorable position going into the meet.  13-6 was not his best effort of the year but it was sandwiched around an opening leg of the 4x200 relay so there was some satisfaction to knowing that he competed well under less than optimal conditions.  The boys 4x800 team led for much of the race before slipping to fourth.  They are happy to be running in the regionals and can't wait to show that they have more in the tank.

Nearly making it to regionals was Brett Hoefling in the high jump and Cody Hamblin in the long jump.  Lydia Berry placed in the high jump and Darcy Householder scored in the discus.  Tyler Burke and Zach Mathis ended their careers with personal bests and Mathis was a near placer in the pole vault.

The girls 4x100 and 4x200 qualified for the finals on Friday.  The boys 4x200 also qualified.  Christina Murr made it in the 100 hurdles.  Jonathan Steingass is in the final 16 in the 1600.  Anyana Pringle is back in the 400 and 200.  Donnie Whyte qualified with a comfortable 800.  Lydia Berry was maybe our biggest surprise in the running events as she ran a great 300 hurdle race and will be back on Friday.  Both the boys and the girls 4x400 ended the meet on a high note by making it back for the finals.  Low notes of the meet were so many close calls by our athletes.  Almost making it back on Friday was Josh Sensenbaugh in the 1600 (he had the same time as the final qualifier), Dishon Meriweather (he was so close in the 100), the 4x100 team (barely nosed out of the finals), Andrew Denlinger (he was faster than six others who made the final in the 800) and Jose Roderick (who nearly qualified in the 110 highs and the 300 hurdles).
