Wayne Warrior Relays

Posted Wednesday, April 04, 2012 by Mike Hout
Like the last several years, we sent our JV to the Wayne Relay meet.  It is a tough assignment, especially in some of the speed events, but the Miamisburg runners and throwers gave it their best shot and ended ahead of a number of varsity squads from other schools.  The boys scored points middle medley relay, 4x800, high jump, pole vault, triple jump and the discus.  The girls scored in the middle medley relay, 4x800, 4x1600, distance medley, pole vault, shot put and discus.

The meet received some nice press in the papers with Dunbar getting the big headlines "DUNBAR SETS MEET RECORDS - Wolverines flash midseason form with relay times".  They broke meet records in the 400, 800 and 1600 meter relays.  Wayne's Courtney Ballard was quoted after winning the pole vault at 11-3 and the long jump at 14-7.25 and getting third in the high jump at 4-8.  "I was over the bar at 11-6 and grazed it coming down.  It was s-o-o-o-o close.  But it's encouraging going that high this early in the season.

Speaking of the pole vault, a very respectable junior high record was broken back in Miamisburg the very same day.  Bailey Mergler, who has worked all winter in preparation for this moment, cleared 11-6 to eclipse the previous record of 11-0 held by Zak Kruer.  Interestingly enough, Bailey would have finished fourth overall at the Wayne Relays against the high school vaulters!

Here are the complete final results:
