Wayne Invitational

Posted Saturday, April 28, 2012 by Mike Hout
The Wayne Invitational is one big giant meet!  The weather always seems to be one big giant headache, too.  At least we didn't have any rain but it did cool off later in the evening which left some pole vaulters with trembling hands.

Congrats to our 4x800 relay team.  On Thursday evening they placed a very fine fifth in a tough field.  I was not able to see much on Friday but I did see an exciting 3200 race where two athletes from Miamisburg ran under 9:51, something that has no Burg squad has ever dreamed of before.  We were close to scoring in a number of events including the 300 hurdles for girls, the 300 hurdles for boys, the girls 1600 and the boys 400.  The big highlight of the night, point wise, was Zak Kruer's stunning pole vault win.  He was unable to get any warmup vaults due to his participation in the 4x200.  He struggled with misses at opening height and other inconsistencies through the night.  He barely made 13-6 on his last jump.  When he came up for his last jump at 14-0, absolutely no one could have guessed what the next five minutes would have in store.  Suddenly he put everything together.  He zoomed over 14-0.  They let him be the first vaulter at 14-6 (so he could run the hurdles) and he zoomed over that to match his pr and to put the pressure on everyone else in the field.  Just that quickly he went from hoping to place to being in the driver's seat.  When everyone else missed their first vault at 14-6 it was going to take a 15-0 vault to beat him and no one could do that this night.
