record number of vaulters at vault camp - more than any other school there!

Posted Thursday, June 28, 2012 by Mike Hout
Skyjumper vault camps are known everywhere for their high quality and how they help vaulters progress.  Many of these are held in California every year but only a few are held outside of that state.  We are fortunate to have one in our area and, in fact, just a few miles from us over at Centerville High School.  It has always been to our advantage to get people over to the camp to learn from the great coaches and the great athletes.  This year there were over 70 vaulters and four pits set up for everyone.

This is the fifth year coach Mike Hout has attended the camp.  Every year he goes and has a new set of questions to ask Jan Johnson, the bronze medalist in the 1972 Olympics.  This year he found out that when Jan had to use borrowed poles for that Olympics, he used Bruce Jenner's poles!

Maybe this is overstating things a bit, but Miamisburg made a significant impact at the camp.  We not only had the best overall vaulter in Zak Kruer but we also had the most participants of any school.  Zak and Laura Shaw were there for the entire camp.  Lexi Williams, Zoe Marcott, Michael McGuire and Bailey Mergler were there for a full day.  We were even able to get our new high schooler Paige Viets there for an afternoon.

Everyone had sore hands and blisters on their palms, but it was all worth it and it will pay off next spring!
