Tipp City Pole Vault Extravaganza

Posted Friday, January 18, 2013 by Mike Hout
Miamisburg's 2013 track and field season is off and running.  Actually, this was just a "field" event meet.  Nothing but pole vault for nearly six hours.  The best news was that as that sixth hour approached, it was a Miamisburg athlete that was still vaulting!

This is the third year for this unique meet.  Proudly, we are able to say that Miamisburg has been in all three of the meets.  Sadly, this is the first year we did not have any girls vaulting.  The boys made up for their absence by making a significant impact in the standings.  Freshman Bailey Mergler vaulted in his first ever varsity meet and would have liked to have done better but he certainly is off to a good start with his sixth place finish.  He has grown and gotten stronger since last year so his stride pattern has changed.  That caused a bit of a challenge as we worked to get his steps more consistent.  He was over 11-6 and barely knocked it off.  He is ready for a stiffer pole and a longer approach so we will see some nice progress from him in the coming weeks.

Senior and all-state performer Zak Kruer passed until only four vaulters were left.  His opening height of 12-0 was the same as last year.  We are happy to report that he did much better than last year (when he no-heighted) and went on to clear 12-6, 13-0 and 13-6.  His clearance of 13-6 was a monster and would have easily gotten him over 14-0.  His official vaults at 14-0 were not  quite as sharp but almost enough to get him the clearance.  He is on track for an even better year than last as he won the meet, tied the meet record and qualified for the indoor state meet in Akron.

Look out Ohio......here comes Miamisburg in the pole vault!
